FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON GETS FIRST WIN IN 3-0 DEFEAT OF MT. ST. MARY’S
Freshman Aubrey McCullough Scores First Career Goal and Adds an Assist

HACKENSACK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women’s soccer team (1-6, 1-3 NEC) defeated Mt. St. Mary’s (0-7, 0-4 NEC) 3-0 for their first win of the season in a Northeast Conference match-up at University Stadium.

A scoreless first half saw just six shots from both teams combined as the two sides traded possessions.  After intermission Knight sophomore Kelly Geraghty (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) scored the game-winner at 56:26 off a corner-kick boot from freshman Aubrey McCullough (Forked River, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) who went on to score three minutes later.  It was fellow rookie Jillian D’Onofrio (East Northport, NY/St. Anthony’s) who served a long pass to McCullough who then beat a defender and took on the goalie from 10 yards out for her first career goal at 59:53.  Graduate student and previous Knight basketball standout Karen Tiedemann (Fallston, MD/Fallston) also scored her first collegiate goal when she intercepted a Mount pass and ran in from 30 yards to send one past the goalie at 70:09.

“All of the pieces came together today,” said head coach Peter Gaglioti.  “We executed clean passes and gave ourselves enough chances.  Most of all we played tough and with a lot of heart.”

Fairleigh Dickinson also got help from defenders Stephanie Williams (Randolph, MA/Braintree) and Josephine Fucci (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) and midfielder Miranda Mignano (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) whose quick feet and ball control helped the Knights to their first victory this season.

The Mount’s best chance to get on the board came with eight minutes left in the first half when a 10-yard shot off a corner was narrowly deflected by Knight goalkeeper Megan McDonnell (Richmond Hill, NY/Cardozo). McDonnell stopped five shots to earn her second career shutout. Mt. St. Mary’s goalkeeper Margaret Pysik (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll) made four saves.

The Knights continue their homestand with a game against local rival St. Peter’s on Wed., October 3 at 4pm.
