Open Season With Two Wins Over Coppin State, 3-0 & 8-1
Serena Larsen rips triple in game one
and three-run homer in night cap
BALTIMORE,
MD – The Fairleigh Dickinson University (2-0) softball team opened
their 2002 season with a bang, posting two wins over Coppin State (0-8):
an eight-inning 3-0 shutout in the first game and an 8-1 victory in the
game two.
It
was a scoreless tie in game one going into the eighth inning. Mo
O'Callahan (Barnegat, NJ/Southern Regional) was advanced from second
to third when Kara Morris (Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah) singled down left
field for the winning run. The Knights would score twice more before
the bottom of the innings where they kept the Lady Eagles scoreless for
the win. Nicole Farrisey (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) pitched her
first collegiate complete game to get the win, giving up two hits. Serena
Larsen (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park) had the first hit of the
season with a triple in the first inning. Lady Eagle hurler Jamie Imhof
moved to 0-3 on the season after game one despite striking out 13 Knight
batters.
The
teams were 1-1 going into the fifth inning of game two when Larsen
ripped her first career homerun, a three-run swing, to give the Knights
the 4-1 advantage. FDU slowly increased their lead, getting a triple from Jessi
Potter (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) and two rbi from Caroline Kovach
(Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) before earning the 8-1 victory. Larsen
finished the game 3-4 with three rbi and Kovach went 1-2. Marliese
Kotrosits (Whitehall, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) pitched five
innings for the Knights' while Jennifer
Buehler (Oriskany, NY/Rome Catholic) pitched the last two innings.
"We
played good defense and got good pitching today," said head coach Bob
Bruno. "I think we could have done better offensively but for
our first two games of the season we did fine."
The
FDU softball program took to the field in 2001 for the first time after a
fifteen-year hiatus, finishing the season 2-26. The 3-0 win today
will be the first season-opening win for the Knights in the new era and
the 8-1 victory in game two is the largest win margin so far.
The
Knights face George Mason on Monday, March 18th. The doubleheader
begins at 2:00 p.m.
