UMBC Defeats Knights Softball, 10-2 and 9-2
Caroline Kovach goes 4-for-6 in Knights’ home opener doubleheader

HACKENSACK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University (2-4, 0-2 NEC) softball team dropped two conference games to the visiting UMBC Retrievers (20-11, 4-0 NEC) by scores of 10-2 and 9-2 in Foschini Park.

In game one the Retrievers opened an early lead by scoring their first four batters in the top of the first inning.  The Knights recovered from their home-opening jitters to score two in the second.  With Serena Larsen (Soph., DH, Palisades Park, NJ) and Caroline Kovach (Soph., LF, Tinton Falls, NJ) on base with singles, Maureen O’Callahan (Soph., C, Barnegat, NJ) ripped her first triple of the season for two rbi, bringing the Knights within 4-2.  UMBC scored one more in the third and one more in the sixth to widen the margin to 6-2 going into the seventh inning where three Knight errors helped the Retrievers to four more runs and the final 10-2 loss.

The teams combined for 24 hits in game one with Kovach leading the way for the Knights with a perfect 3-for-3 game. Deanna Vecchio (Sr., SS, Matawan, NJ) went 4-for-4 for the Retrievers in game one with two rbi and two runs scored. Angie Amedro (Sr., RHP, Pennellville, NY) got the win for UMBC pitching six innings and giving up two runs.  The Knights’ Nicole Farrissey (Fr., RHP, Paramus, NJ) moves to 1-2 on the season, pitching a complete seven innings.

UMBC scored one run in each of the first three innings of game two to take the 3-0 lead before the Knights’ responded with two in the bottom of the fourth to stay within a one-run margin.  Fairleigh Dickinson couldn’t get any closer as the Retrievers’ pounded the basepaths for six more runs, including five in the sixth inning. Linsi Moy (Sr., RHP, Kirkland, WA) earned the win for the Retrievers, striking out three and walking one in five innings.  Marlise Kotrosits (Fr., RHP, Whitehall, PA) gave up just one earned run in six innings for the Knights but moves to 1-2 on the season.

The Knights return to action when they host Quinnipiac for an NEC doubleheader on Friday, March 29 at 1:00pm and then return on Saturday to face Central Connecticut for two more games in Foschini Park.
