Defeat CCSU for First-Ever NEC Sweep, 5-4 and 4-1
HACKENSACK,
NJ
–
The Fairleigh Dickinson University (4-6,
2-4 NEC) softball team earned their first home wins and first Northeast
Conference wins of the season, taking two games from the visiting Central
Connecticut (5-14, 1-5 NEC) Blue Devils, 5-4 and 4-1 in Foschini Park. Caroline Kovach (Soph., LF, Tinton, Falls,
NJ) started the scoring for the Knights’ in game
one with a bases-empty inside-the-park home run down the right field line
in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1. FDU took the lead in the
second inning with two more runs but the Blue Devils scored two of their
own in the third and added one more in the fourth for a 4-3 lead going
into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Knights got two on base and Serena
Larsen (Soph., C, Palisades Park, NJ) singled in one run and Mo
O’Callahan (Soph., DH, Barnegat, NJ) singled in another for the
Knights’ first home and NEC win of the year. Jennifer Buehler (Fr., RHP, Oriskany, NY) got
the win with three innings of relief.
She gave up one run on two hits and struck out three without a walk
for a 1-2 season record. Danielle Cyr (Fr., RHP, Beacon Falls, CT) took
the loss for the Blue Devils, working 6.2 innings, striking out six and
walking one. Central Connecticut scored in the first
frame of game two and would hold at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth.
With two outs already against the Knights and Potter on base
with a walk, Serena Larsen (Soph., DH, Palisades Park, NJ) singled
and Kim Farhat (Fr., SS, Paramus, NJ) walked to load the bases.
With a 2-2 count, Kovach launched her second home run of the
day to right field for her first-ever collegiate grand slam and the
Knights’ 4-1 advantage. FDU tightly held a lead until a two-out rally by the Blue
Devils in the last inning threatened the win. With two on base Knights’
pitcher Nicole Farrissey (Fr., RHP, Paramus, NJ) struck out her
last batter to complete FDU’s first-ever NEC sweep. Farrissey
fanned seven and walked five in her fourth complete game of the season,
moving to 2-2. Aime Hannon
(Fr., RHP, Bristol, Conn.) dropped her third game of the year, giving up
four runs in six innings and striking out three. Kovach finished the day
4-for-6 with five rbi and two runs scored.
Larsen was also 4-for-6, adding one run and one rbi.
The Knights’ second year program has now surpassed its win total
from 2001 and tied their NEC victory total. The Knights return to action on Monday,
April 1st for a doubleheader at local non-conference opponent
St. Peter’s starting at 3:00 p.m. *
