Island Sweeps FDU Softball HACKENSACK, NJ – The Fairleigh Dickinson University (7-19, 5-13 NEC) softball team dropped two games to the visiting Long Island (21-17, 16-0 NEC) Blackbirds in conference action, 14-0 and 11-1. The Blackbirds remain undefeated in the Northeast Conference. It was a 3-0 lead for the Blackbirds through four innings in the first game with the Knights having allowed five hits. LIU broke the game open in the fifth inning with three runs, highlighted by Crystal Eubanks (Jr., RHP, La Palma, CA) sixth home run of the season, a two-rbi shot to center field, for the 6-0 lead. LIU wasn’t done as they blasted seven more hits in the top of the sixth and capitalized on two Knight errors for eight more runs and the eventual win. The Knights’ Nicole Farrissey (Fr., RHP, Paramus, NJ) struck out one and gave up just one earned run in four and one-third innings, but moved to 3-8 on the season with the loss. Eubanks, who also went 2-for-3 with four rbi in the game, pitched five innings, striking out five and walking none. She improves to 16-9 on the season. LIU scored one in each of the first three frames of game two with the Knights responding in the bottom of the third with their first run. Kim Edone (Fr., RF, Paramus, NJ) walked, was bunted over to second by Mo O’Callahan (Soph., C, Barnegat, NJ) and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With her first double of the season, Kim Farhat (Fr., RF, Paramus, NJ) scored Edone to close the margin to 3-1. The Blackbirds scored two more in the fourth to hold a 5-1 margin, which lasted until the top of the seventh. LIU had one more last-inning rally in store as a flurry of Knights’ errors and two hits pushed the final score to 11-1. Chelsea Crosby (Fr., RHP, Reno, NV) moved to 2-1 on the season with the win. She pitched five innings, allowing three hits and one run, striking out two. Jennifer Buehler (Fr., RHP, Oriskany, NY) went the distance for the Knights, striking out two and walking one with three earned runs. Sayde Marzolf (Soph., SS, Sumner, WA) and Margie Foster (Soph. 3B, Carson City, NV) each had three hits and two runs scored for the Blackbirds in game two. Caroline Kovach (Soph., LF, Tinton Falls, NJ) went 2-for-3, hitting her first triple of the season. The Knights host St. Peter’s on Tuesday, April 16th for their last home games of the 2002 season. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm. *
