Peter's Sweeps Two From FDU, 4-1 and 5-1 JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's swept a non-conference college softball doubleheader from visiting Fairleigh Dickinson Friday afternoon, 4-1 and 5-1.Saint Peter's, 26-16, has won four in a row and 14 of its last 17. Fairleigh Dickinson, which revived its softball program last year, wrapped up the 2002 season with an 8-25 record. Saint Peter's took the first game, 4-1, behind the combined pitching effort of senior RHP Joy Walter (South Plainfield/South Plainfield HS) and junior RHP Kathryn Bucco (Matawan/St. John Vianney HS). Walter, making her first start of the year after four relief outings, faced 13 batters and retired all but one, a two-out fourth inning home run by FDU LF Caroline Kovach. Bucco worked the last three innings for her second save, while Walter is now 1-0. The two Saint Peter's pitchers combined to allow 4 hits, with 8 strikeouts and no walks. The Peahens got two runs apiece in the first and third innings. Junior RF Marsha Kelley (Mickleton/Kingsway Regional HS) doubled home two runs in the first, while freshman SS Nikki Melchiorre (Marlton/Cherokee HS) homered to lead off the third and freshman C Theresa Tepedino (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea HS) singled home Kelley with the fourth run. Freshman RHP Nicole Farrissey was the starting pitcher and loser in both games for FDU, as she dropped to 4-12 on the season. The Knights took their only lead of the day, 1-0, in the third inning of the nightcap, as freshman 3B Jessi Potter doubled and scored on a two-out single by freshman 1B Courtney Rejent. Saint Peter's tied the game in the fourth on another run-scoring single by Tepedino. The Peahens took control with a three-run fifth inning that included three stolen bases and RBI singles by 3B Pam DeLuca (Middletown/Red Bank Catholic HS), 1B Candace Winder (Waldwick/Waldwick HS) and a run-scoring double by Tepedino. SPC got its fifth run in the sixth inning when 2B Jessica Perez (Clifton/St. Mary's HS) tripled and scored on Melchiorre's sacrifice fly. Senior RHP Cathy Cresci (Dayton/South Brunswick HS) worked the last three scoreless innings, picking up the win to go 5-1 on the year. Melchiorre, the freshman shortstop, was 4-for-5 with two steals, three runs and two RBI in the doubleheader. Tepedino was 5-for-6 with 3 RBI. *
