Child and Adolescent ADHD Clinic

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, is a neurological disorder that affects up to 5% of school-aged children and adolescents. Children with ADHD may exhibit developmentally inappropriate attention skills, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and poor school performance. If undiagnosed and untreated, ADHD can negatively impact a child's ability to effectively learn at home and school, as well as to develop healthy relationships with family, peers, and adults.

The Clinic provides comprehensive assessment and intervention services for children with ADHD. Children, parents, and teachers are trained on cognitive behavioral techniques to promote children’s learning, social skills, impulse control, and/or anger management. Individual and family therapy and school-based consultation are available. The Child ADHD Multimodal Program (CAMP), an empirically-based group training program is also available for children, parents, and teachers. See coverage in FDU Magazine.

    • Child Group Training Program
Group training provides children with a natural context to learn and practice new ways to socialize and problem solve with their peers. Children are taught problem solving skills through structured play activities, didactic instruction, symbolic and in vivo modeling, role- playing, behavioral rehearsal, and coaching. The child training group focuses on social skills, impulsivity, and anger management. A token economy system and other behavioral techniques are used to encourage children to master new skills and promote their self confidence.

    • Parent Group Training Program
The parent training group is an excellent opportunity for parents to learn new skills, share knowledge and information, and obtain support. Each parent group session is approximately 90 minutes.

Topics presented include: Overview of ADHD and ADHD-Related Disorders, Building Healthy Family Interactions, Developing a Structured Learning Environment at Home, Implementing and Monitoring Behavioral Interventions at Home, Collaborating with School Personnel, Managing Stress and Anger, Planning for Challenges in Public Settings, Evaluating Treatment Plans, and Obtaining Resources and Supports in the Community. Weekly homework assignments are given to improve learning and social interactions at home and school.

Child and Parent ADHD Group Training Program
Children and parents are carefully screened in order to identify those families who would most benefit from the program. Parents are asked to complete an application and several assessment instruments on their child. All information is kept confidential.

    • Advocacy Services
It is important for parents to know what behavioral and learning supports their children need and what services are available in the school and community. We can explain these services to you in detail, discuss your eligibility, and work with you to obtain these services.

The Clinic is staffed by licensed psychologists, certified school psychologists, and doctoral students in the School Psychology and Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programs at FDU. Payment is required at the first training session and receipts for services are provided for insurance purposes. Fees on a sliding scale basis and flexible payment schedules are available.
