Faculty Round Table
at
The Collegiate Volunteer Fair

2:00 ~ 4:00 PM
September 21, 2000
Chesler Room in the Library

All faculty are invited to participate in a round table discussion dealing with service-learning. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to learn more about this pedagogy and how it has enhanced the classroom of so many successful faculty members. Share you success stories with others and learn what others are doing to make their courses more engaging and meaningful to their students. Get valuable resources for your next class and visit the fair for many contacts that would normally take hours of calling on the phone. Hope to see you there.

Service Learning

Service learning refers to the integration of community service into an organized setting where the servers reflect upon the meaning of their service. By combining the service experience with a reflective educational structure, powerful benefits will be created that go beyond what either service or learning can offer separately. More specifically, by combining service and learning, individuals who perform community service will be able to see the connections between their work and the underlying values and issues behind the problems being addressed. They can develop a habit of critical reflection on their experiences enabling them to learn more throughout life. The combination of service and learning causes parties from different backgrounds and settings to come together and do common work, and through reflection, learn more about each other and respect each others’ cultural differences. The synthesis of service experience with an educational framework offers benefits which far exceed what service or learning offer separately. When service is used as the basis for critical reflection, students better understand their roles and responsibilities as citizens of the world.
