Introduction for Theater UnitThis is not Week Two.This unit can be done at any time during the semester, but must be completed before going to see a play and writing the play paper. Also, remember that you must have your play approved by the professor prior to attending the play. You could attend a play on the Teaneck campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University at the American Stage Theater. Or you could attend a play in your own community or go to a Broadway play. The lecture notes are just an introduction to the elements of live theater. These topics are meant to make the student think about what it is that makes live theater unique. For instance, lighting and stage sets are discussed, as they are integral parts of the theater experience and should be discussed within the parameters of your play papers. For the most part, what makes theater different from going to the movies is that it is "live." It is happening right before the eyes of the audience. The director canšt say "cut" and do the scene over. This gives it a more immediate feeling. And some people think this makes it more exciting. Take a look at the lecture notes. You might want to print them out and take them with you to the play. You could jot down ideas about each topic and use it as a checklist. During intermission or after the play is over you can check off the topics as you write your ideas in the margins or on the back of the sheet. Be sure to keep a copy of the playbook, there can be useful information inside. Never copy text from the playbook. I usually have a copy or can get a copy of the playbook. After you read the lecture notes. Read the Play Paper instructions. |
