Cultural Activities
"Regarding the cultural functions, again we didn't want to leave such
participation to chance. If the entire student body was to see a certain
play, the tickets were bought en masse. ... And it was good for the instructors
too, because too many of them tend to leave for tomorrow-and-tomorrow participation
in the cultural events that should be part of the life of the academic man.
It was the same for the opera, the symphony, and the ballet. For many of
[the students] it was the first experience in all of these activities. It
gave the students an opportunity to converse intelligently and in a sophisticated
manner: it was a socializing experience too. What can be more pleasurable
to a girl than to go to a symphony and sit between two male classmates,
and then discuss the performance? Even if the students don't like it, they
have something in common and it gives them a yardstick for future happenings."
