Doctoral Study
"I have seen how so many candidates for doctoral degrees have frittered
away years of desultory study, sometimes because of their dilatory approach
but very often because of lackadaisical methods of guidance by the university
involved. To me it is just short of criminal to let a graduate student
take course after course and then to discourage him at the last barrier
by prolonging the thesis-writing, by changing advisors, or by simple neglect."
