"Football is a rat race no matter how you look at it. It does build
up for a few fleeting hours an artificial and sophomoric school spirit,
and I suppose in the nature of things this does have a certain value. I
should think that the emphasis ought to be on building up an élan
based on things of the mind or on serving other people."
