Prejudice
The Ambassador from Dahomey, Mr. Louis Ignacio-Pinto, "paid his protocol
call on President Kennedy, [and] on the way back he stopped at a hamburger
stand in Maryland. At first he ate outside but, because it got windy, he
decided to go indoors. He was stopped at the door and told that colored
people were not allowed inside. To him this was inconceivable. Here he
had just been welcomed at the White House, and now he could not eat in a
public restaurant. To say that this was a traumatic experience would be
putting it very mildly indeed."
