"The library, of course, was the heart of the Abbey, and rarely was
it seen without a whole group of students reading away or working on their
reports. It was a pleasant place to be in; it was inviting, and I am sure
that the students had the same experience that I had -- the spirit soared
as one looked over the spacious window to the green meadows beyond. As a
matter of fact, I purposely had a nearby farmer graze his sheep on our meadows
so that they could be seen gamboling as we read in the library. The students
were busy every minute of the day, and they loved it. How wonderful it would
be if every student in every American college could have such an experience!
.. There was something in the Abbey that promoted an intellectual frame
of mind without in any way interfering with with the conviviality that should
obtain in any academic setting."
