Uca pugnax, a species of fiddler crab, in the Spartina-grass zone above the mudflats at the Shark River estuary, Bellmar, NJ. This specimen is a male, and the large cheliped he is flourishing is used mainly for display and for competitive intimidation of other males. The fiddler crabs are algae-eaters and deposit-feeders.
