How to Protect Smartphone Users

AdaptiveMobile, major company focused on mobile security, had conducted a survey regarding U.S. Smartphone users' awareness of mobile threats. Results were reported in September 2011 indicating 68% of users felt data security was more important than call quality BUT ONLY 23% of users used security software AdaptiveMobile report

Although carriers and OS companies are responsible for protecting user information, consumers should become more assertive and vigilant to help protect themselves from cybercriminal activities.


Suggestions include:

**Proper management of Smartphones
- keep device in a secured location
- utilize lockout options (PIN/passwords)
- be aware of surroundings

**Ensure the security software, web browsers and operating systems are current


**Back up information to alternate source


**Caution when connecting to websites, downloading applications or purchases
- ensure website is trustworthy
- avoid unfamiliar or suspicious wireless connection locations
- make sure data is encrypted
- research company or seller prior to transaction


**Report any inapprpriate activity to carriers, Federal Trade Commission, Federal Commission or any legal authority
- government is working to help protect consumers
