Through the Tunnel: Negotiating Wayne Wiegand's Tunnel
Vision and Blind Spots
Length: 120 minutes Abstract: Library scholar and historian Wayne Wiegand wrote in The Library Quarterly, in January 1999, that library scholarship is missing a crucial element in its literature and tradition: an examination of relationships between power and knowledge and the role of the library and the librarian in such relationships. Wiegand referred to this lack as comprising serious "tunnel vision" and "blind spots" within the field and called for these areas to be addressed with respect to contemporary movements in social scientific, philosophical, and critical thought. In response to Wiegand's call, this panel of library scholars and researchers examines the role of the library with respect to the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, Antonio Gramsci, Stuart Hall, and Michel Foucault, and provides an analysis of the philosophical underpinnings of prominent understandings of the library. It is unique in turning to literatures outside of library and information science in order to draw conclusions that are pertinent to library issues and concerns. Convenor: Marie L.
