MATH 1128                           EMM CHAPTER 4 APPLICATIONS                    RICHTON

1)  Suppose a baseball is thrown at 85 miles per hour.  The ball will travel 320 feet when hit by a bat  swung at 50 miles per hour and will travel 440 feet when hit by a bat swung at 80 miles per hour.  Let  B  be the number of feet traveled by the ball when hit by a bat swung at  S  miles per hour.  How much farther will a ball travel for each mile per hour increase in the speed of the bat?

2) Ventilation is an effective method of removing air pollutants.  According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. a classroom should have a ventilation rate of 15 cubic feet per minute for each person in the classroom.  How much ventilation   V   (in cubic feet per hour) is needed for a classroom with 30 people in it?

                                                LINEAR COST FUNCTIONS

Write a linear cost function for each of the following.  Identify all variables used.

1)  For a 1 – day rental, a car rental firm charges $14 plus  6 cents per mile.

2)      The fixed cost is $100;  50 items cost $1600 to produce.

3)      The marginal cost is $90.  150 items cost $16,000 to produce.
